en.Wedoany.com Report, The Aberdeenshire Infrastructure Services Committee has recently completed detailed flood studies for the areas of Kennay and Kintore, paving the way for applying for funding through the Scottish Government's prioritization process. The Kennay area has been repeatedly affected by flooding from the River Don, with particularly severe events in 2016 and 2020. Currently, around 260 residents and 130 residential and business properties remain at flood risk. Kintore faces flood threats from the River Don and several tributaries, with recent significant events including Storm Frank in 2016 and flooding in November 2022. Currently, about 370 residents and 200 properties are at risk, and this number is projected to increase further by the 2080s. The advancement of this key technology will provide vital safety and security for the local communities.

In Kennay, the preferred flood protection scheme includes constructing an embankment at Kenbill Park to enhance protection from the River Don, and installing a Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) attenuation pond at Milton Meadow. The Kenbill project is expected to provide protection against a 1-in-200-year flood event, safeguarding approximately 55 properties. The SuDS attenuation pond would offer protection against a 1-in-100-year flood event, protecting around 9 properties. The total estimated cost for these two elements is £1.88 million. In Kintore, following consultation with the community, the prioritized scheme includes creating an upstream storage area at Sheriff Burn and installing flood defense structures such as flood walls near Macallen Road on Torryburn. The upstream storage area could protect about 28 properties, and the direct defense structures could protect around 21 properties, with a total cost of approximately £1 million. Both flood protection plans are tailored to the local geographical conditions and flood characteristics.

According to study assessments, future flood events in Kennay and Kintore are projected to cause economic damages of around £3 million each if no intervention is taken. Philip McKay, Head of Roads and Infrastructure Services for the council, stated that with agreement on the preferred options for both communities, the flood protection scheme proposals can now progress through the Scottish Government's funding prioritization process. If funding is successfully secured, this flood protection plan will provide long-term protection for homes, businesses, transport links, and water quality monitoring, reducing recovery costs and enhancing resident well-being.
