en.Wedoany.com Reported - Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) has recently completed a review of the speed limit zone at the eastern entrance to Bathurst on the Great Western Highway and decided to shorten the 70 km/h speed limit zone by 230 meters. The review was conducted in response to safety concerns raised by the community.
TfNSW Executive Director Damien Pfeiffer said the review assessed multiple factors, including location, crash history, road environment, number of access points, road usage, traffic composition, and traffic volumes, and determined that shortening the 70 km/h speed limit zone would improve safety at the busy intersection. Pfeiffer noted: "The Great Western Highway at Kelso is a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction and a 3.8-metre-wide central median, serving as the main regional route connecting Sydney with the Central West of NSW. The intersection with Stockland Drive attracts many vehicles travelling to and from several large retail outlets and service stations, and experiences high turning traffic volumes." He added that in the five years to 30 June 2024, eight crashes were reported within the review area, with the most common type being eastbound vehicles turning right into Stockland Drive.
Based on the review findings, effective from 7 May, the 70 km/h speed limit zone on the Great Western Highway, which currently ends on the eastern side of the Stockland Drive intersection, will be shortened by 230 meters to end on the western side of Stockland Drive. This change will extend the existing 60 km/h speed limit to cover all signalised sections near Stockland Drive. Travel time on the Great Western Highway will increase by a few seconds, but it is expected to improve safety for vehicles entering and exiting Stockland Drive.
Bathurst Regional Council and local police have been consulted on the matter and support the speed limit zone change.
