en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) will hold its 51st Annual Conference (DFI51) from November 2 to 5, 2026, in Orlando, Florida, with a theme centered on the multifaceted challenges posed by global sea level rise. This year's event is expected to attract over 1,500 professionals from fields including geotechnical engineering and construction, policy, finance, insurance, and flood management.

DFI Executive Director Theresa Engler stated that DFI51 brings together top experts from around the world, spanning disciplines, industries, and organizations, to share knowledge, build connections, and deepen collective understanding of sea level impacts. Attendees will explore cutting-edge research, emerging technologies, and sustainable practices to protect coastal communities, critical infrastructure, economies, and ecosystems.

The technical agenda explores advances in industry practices, technologies, and project delivery through perspectives, case studies, and research-based papers and reports. Dr. Ignazio Paolo Marzano (P.E.), Advisor at Sapienza University of Rome and Co-Chair of the DFI51 Program, noted that the depth and diversity of the DFI51 technical agenda reflect the growing importance of deep foundations and geotechnical engineering in marine and coastal development. By bringing together experts from academia, industry, and government, this conference will provide a vital platform for knowledge exchange and support decision-making in the management, planning, and design of critical infrastructure.

Agenda highlights include a keynote address by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Major General Jason E. Kelly, along with presentations and panel discussions on several topics: Venice's protection interventions (Venice Lagoon); Florida coastal planning, policy, and construction; San Francisco Bay Area waterfront resilience (from funding to design); large-scale projects in the northeastern United States; greening infrastructure for future coasts; international storm surge barrier construction and performance in Italy, the Mediterranean coast, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States; and risks related to insurance, policy, and financing for coastal solutions.

According to reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and data from NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), scientific consensus indicates that sea level rise is occurring faster than historical averages and accelerating, creating an urgent need for practical, near-term solutions. P.E. Ashley Loyola of Florida International University, a member of the DFI51 Organizing Committee, stated that sea level rise is not just an engineering challenge—it is a groundwater issue, a materials issue, a planning issue, and ultimately a community issue. Conferences like this bring together different disciplines that traditionally do not sit at the same table, which is essential for developing solutions that truly work in the real world.
