en.Wedoany.com Reported - Cloudflare (Cloudflare Inc.) announced the acquisition of open-source company VoidZero (VoidZero Inc.), which owns the widely used JavaScript build tool Vite and its associated toolchain. The move aims to integrate this toolchain into the Cloudflare Workers developer platform, providing a smoother path from coding to deployment for AI-assisted web development.
Vite has become the default tool for JavaScript and TypeScript development, with over 100 million weekly downloads. VoidZero's other tools serve the same workflow, including Vitest for testing, Rolldown—a bundler written in Rust—and the underlying Oxc toolchain. The company's founder, Evan You, who is also the creator of the Vue.js framework, founded VoidZero in 2023.
Cloudflare plans to integrate the toolchain into the Workers platform, offering developers a single path from writing code in a notebook to deploying on the Cloudflare network, reducing the need to switch between different standalone tools. Cloudflare stated that the weekly downloads of the Cloudflare Vite plugin have reached 13.9 million, accounting for over 10% of Vite's total weekly downloads. This acquisition comes amid a backdrop where autonomous AI coding agents are reshaping how applications are built. Cloudflare believes that as AI agents write more code, the tools surrounding them need to improve in tandem, making fast and stable behavior from local environments to production a priority.
"The best engineers I know are shipping more code than ever before, with less hand-written code," said Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare. "Bringing in their team provides millions of developers—and the AI agents working alongside them—with the fastest path from local code to our global network." VoidZero's team, described by Cloudflare as open-source creators and Rust optimization experts, will join the company's "Emerging Technologies & Incubation" organization and continue to lead these projects. Evan You will continue to oversee the open-source roadmap of the toolchain.
To address concerns about a single vendor controlling widely used open-source infrastructure, Cloudflare stated that Vite, Vitest, Rolldown, Oxc, and Vite+ will remain open-source under the MIT license and remain vendor-neutral. The company has committed $1 million to an independent Vite ecosystem fund to support maintainers and contributors unaffiliated with VoidZero or Cloudflare. In a blog post, Evan You said the deal resolves the monetization challenges that plagued VoidZero, despite the rapid adoption of its tools. The company had previously experimented with a mixed licensing model and, before acquisition talks, was independently building a Vite-native deployment platform called Void on top of Cloudflare. VoidZero had raised seed and Series A funding led by Accel (Accel). This deal continues a series of acquisitions by Cloudflare targeting AI-native networks. The company acquired licensing data startup Human Native (Human Native) in January of this year and is steadily expanding its Agent Cloud tools for building and running AI agents.
