en.Wedoany.com Reported - OpenAI has launched a major upgrade to its memory system called Dreaming for Plus and Pro users in the United States, marking the third major version of ChatGPT's memory function since its initial release in April 2024.

The first-generation memory system, Saved Memories, launched in April 2024, required users to explicitly instruct ChatGPT to save information. The Dreaming version introduced in April 2025 added background processes that automatically synthesize memories from chat history without relying on explicit instructions. The latest version, Dreaming V3, adopts a more efficient and powerful architecture. OpenAI stated that recent improvements have reduced the computing power required to provide this feature to free users by approximately five times, paving the way for broader deployment.
OpenAI evaluates memory quality across three dimensions and publishes success rates for each version. In terms of factual recall, the success rate was 41.5% for Saved Memories in 2024, 67.9% for Dreaming V0 in 2025, and 82.8% for Dreaming V3 in 2026. For preference adherence, the system's ability to follow user constraints such as diet and behavior improved from 31.4% in 2024 to 55.3% in 2025, and further to 71.3% in 2026. For timeliness maintenance, i.e., the ability to update memories as circumstances change, the rate was 9.4% in 2024, 52.2% in 2025, and rose to 75.1% in 2026. Previously, the system might still consider past trips as ongoing even after users returned home; Dreaming V3 can automatically refresh memories to reflect the passage of time.
Users can view the personal information stored by ChatGPT through the newly launched memory summary page, including summaries of work, hobbies, travel, and preferences. Users can actively add or modify details, instruct ChatGPT to focus on or ignore specific topics, delete individual memories at any time, or completely disable the memory function in settings. Temporary chats do not use or update memories. Conversations involving linked financial accounts follow independent memory rules and can be managed separately.
Dreaming V3 is now available to Plus and Pro users in the United States, and will expand to other countries and be offered to free and Go users in the coming weeks. OpenAI has not provided a specific date for broader rollout.
