Work Begins on Philippines Container Port After 23 Years

Wedoany.com Report-Feb 19, Construction has begun on Cebu New Port, a container port based on 25ha of reclaimed land in the Philippines.
The facility is being built 10km northwest of the existing port, for which it will act as an overflow. It will contain a 500m-long, 12m-deep dock capable of handling 2,000 shipping containers at one time.
The $290m scheme will also involve the construction of 1.3km of access roads. It was financed by the World Bank and the Export-Import Bank of Korea.
The Department of Transportation and Cebu Port Authority selected South Korea’s HJ Shipbuilding & Construction to build the port in November 2024.
Jaime Bautista, the Philippines’ transport secretary, said: “The benefits of this project extend far beyond its physical structure. It is expected to generate a wide array of advantages for users, the local community and the public sector.”The project is due to be completed by the second quarter of 2028.
