en.Wedoany.com Reported - BP has produced the first commercial non-associated natural gas from the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) deepwater project in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, as the operator seeks to extend production from the 30-year-old field by adding a natural gas hub.
BP reported on June 1 that the first well drilled from the West Chirag platform has launched the development of ACG's estimated recoverable natural gas reserves of 4 trillion cubic feet (with potential reserves of up to 6 trillion cubic feet). The well also provided the formation and flow data needed to map the full-field gas development.
Gio Cristofoli, BP's Regional President for Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye, stated that ACG is opening a new chapter after nearly 30 years of oil production and will continue to create value for the country and investors. He added that with gas development advancing in parallel with oil, ACG is positioned as an integrated oil and gas asset that can lead the regional industry and support Azerbaijan's efforts to increase energy supplies to Europe and its energy transition.
The first production well drilled last year produced the initial commercial natural gas, targeting two priority reservoirs—the shallower Qirmaki Upper Sand and the deeper Qirmaki Lower Sand—both located beneath the producing oil zone. BP stated that the well confirmed the presence of natural gas resources in the Qirmaki Upper Sand and encountered high-pressure natural gas in the Qirmaki Lower Sand, which will be the initial focus of well and reservoir testing.
The produced natural gas and condensate will be transported to the Sangachal terminal via the existing ACG infrastructure through an integrated oil and gas development system, effectively utilizing offshore facilities.
BP operates ACG jointly with partners Azerbaijan's SOCAR, Hungary's MOL, Japan's INPEX, ExxonMobil, Türkiye's TPAO, and India's ONGC Videsh. BP stated that the ACG Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) was amended in September 2024 to allow for the exploration, appraisal, development, and production of non-associated gas reservoirs in multiple geological layers above and below the field's oil zone. This addendum is valid until the end of the existing ACG PSA in 2049.
