en.Wedoany.com Reported - Henkel's Adhesive Technologies business unit announced that its two flagship plants in Kurkumbh, India, and Gebkim, Turkey, have achieved carbon-neutral production. These two plants have successfully eliminated Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, marking significant progress toward the company's goal of decarbonizing its operations by 2030. This achievement supports Henkel's science-based climate targets, which focus on reducing operational greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency improvements, electrification, and the phase-out of fossil fuels, while expanding the use of renewable energy across global production sites.

At the Kurkumbh plant, carbon-neutral operations were achieved by replacing furnace oil-fired thermal fluid heaters with efficient electric heating systems, eliminating fossil fuel use. This transformation involved a comprehensive upgrade of the plant's energy infrastructure, including optimizing thermal loads, installing advanced high-efficiency heat exchangers, and making significant investments in electrical capacity to support full electrification. Combined with the transition to 100% renewable electricity, these measures eliminated approximately 11,300 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.

At the Gebkim plant in Turkey, Henkel implemented a landmark electrification project, completely replacing natural gas boilers with an efficient electric boiler system. This move eliminated the plant's direct fossil fuel use, reducing Scope 1 emissions to zero and cutting approximately 956 tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually. The plant has fully transitioned to 100% renewable electricity, combining on-site solar power generation with International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC). As a result, Scope 2 emissions have also been reduced to zero, and the efficiency gains from the new system allow the plant to maintain production levels with lower total energy consumption. Through the combination of electrification and renewable energy procurement, the Gebkim plant has achieved full decarbonization of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.

Simon Ulmann, Vice President of Supply Chain and Operations for Henkel Adhesive Technologies in the IMEA region, stated: "Achieving carbon-neutral production at two key flagship plants in our IMEA region is a solid step forward in advancing Henkel Adhesive Technologies' global sustainability ambitions. Our goal is clear: we are systematically eliminating fossil fuels from all our operations and replacing them with electrified processes powered by renewable energy. Our manufacturing milestones in Kurkumbh and Gebkim demonstrate how we translate strategy into tangible impact at the plant level, accelerating our journey toward net-zero operations."
