en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Austrian Rail Freight Group (OBB Rail Cargo Group) has officially inaugurated the modernized combined transport terminal in Přerov-Horní Moštěnice. The project, which took 16 months to complete, aims to increase capacity and improve freight handling efficiency.

The renovation transformed the original freight terminal into a larger and more efficient logistics hub to meet the growing demand for intermodal transport in Central Europe. The project addressed long-standing operational bottlenecks and reserved additional capacity for future development. After the renovation, the terminal area expanded by approximately 17,100 square meters, reaching a total of about 36,000 square meters, nearly doubling its size.

This investment has brought larger loading, unloading, and storage areas, improved railway track accessibility, and equipped the terminal with new freight handling equipment. These improvements are expected to enhance operational flexibility and improve customer service quality. Currently, the terminal can accommodate approximately 3,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), enabling more efficient container handling while supporting higher-frequency freight train operations.

The modernized facility is expected to solidify Přerov's position as a major distribution center in the Central Moravia region, with its strong rail and road connections supporting regional and international logistics flows. Future plans include launching new rail freight services connecting the terminal to the Adriatic ports of Koper and Rijeka. The site is also expected to strengthen intermodal corridors in Central Europe and support Eurasian rail freight routes via Budapest. The expanded area also creates conditions for handling semi-trailers, increasing the range of intermodal services offered to freight customers.

Christoph Grasl, a member of the Board of Directors of the OBB Rail Cargo Group, stated: "We see Přerov as a key hub for the further development of combined transport in Central Europe. Our long-term goal is to build a robust and flexible logistics infrastructure that provides stability for our customers, even during periods of volatility in global supply chains."

The terminal's history as a freight hub dates back to the original ČSKD-INTRANS terminal established in the 1970s. While many similar facilities closed after 1990, Přerov's strategic location allowed it to continue operations and develop into one of the most important intermodal centers in Moravia.

The expansion project supports broader European sustainability goals by encouraging the shift of freight transport from road to rail. Increasing combined transport capacity helps reduce carbon emissions and alleviate pressure on busy road networks. The project was co-financed by the European Union, and the modernization strengthens the role of rail freight as a more sustainable transport option while enhancing the resilience of European supply chains and logistics networks.
