en.Wedoany.com Reported - SK Group is advancing the construction of an artificial intelligence data center test platform in California, USA, with the land purchased by SK Hynix to accumulate experience in independent design and operation.

SK Group purchased the California land last month to set up the test platform. SK Hynix provided the funds for the land acquisition, while subsidiaries such as SK AX, SK Telecom, and SK Broadband have begun discussions on the architecture. The land purchase amount is approximately 30 billion Korean won, but it has not yet been confirmed whether this site is the same as the building on Optical Road in southern San Jose, recently acquired by SK Hynix America for 72.8 billion Korean won. Industry insiders stated that Chairman Chey Tae-won judged that SK Group, with subsidiaries involved in construction, memory semiconductors, and other data center-related fields, has the capability to build and operate independently, and thus issued relevant directives.
The test platform plan is seen as a follow-up move to SK Group's AI data center project in Ulsan. The Ulsan project is a large-scale AI data center built in collaboration with Amazon Web Services at the Mipo National Industrial Complex, targeting a capacity of 100MW by 2029, with over 60,000 graphics processing units deployed. In this project, SK Telecom is responsible for AI solution development and global cooperation, while SK Broadband handles data center construction, having increased its corporate bond issuance from 110 billion Korean won to 160 billion Korean won.
It remains uncertain how much design and operation experience can be gained from the Ulsan project. Global cloud service providers manage site selection, power and cooling design, server deployment, operational automation, and fault response systems as internal core capabilities, making it difficult for partners to directly transfer related know-how through investment or construction. Industry insiders noted that the U.S. test platform will serve as a touchstone to verify whether SK Group can integrate its construction, communication, and semiconductor capabilities into an AI infrastructure business.
