en.Wedoany.com Reported - Samsung Electronics has developed the industry's fastest Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 5.0 solution, designed to enable efficient AI services on future mobile devices. This solution enhances performance, allowing mobile device users to significantly reduce latency and accelerate response times when running large language models (LLMs) in on-device AI environments.

Samsung Electronics announced that it has become the first in the industry to develop the fastest Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 5.0 solution.

"In the era of on-device AI, storage devices are evolving into key drivers that define the AI experience," said Jangseok Choi, Head of Memory Product Planning at Samsung Electronics. "As we successfully move beyond the development stage of the industry's first UFS 5.0 solution, Samsung is setting a new standard for mobile storage and will continue to drive innovation in the next-generation mobile platform market."

Generative AI is rapidly shifting from the cloud to on-device environments, driving a surge in the scale of data required for local processing. Consequently, storage is evolving from a medium primarily used for data storage into a core infrastructure supporting AI computing.

Samsung's UFS 5.0 integrates the latest JEDEC embedded memory interface standard, achieving the industry's highest bandwidth—up to 10.8 gigabytes per second (GB/s). This new storage solution offers sequential read speeds of up to 10.8 GB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 9.5 GB/s, more than double the previous-generation UFS 4.1 standard. This advancement enables on-device AI applications to store and process large amounts of data faster.

Compared to Samsung's UFS 4.1 solution, UFS 5.0 improves energy efficiency by over 40%. This is achieved through innovations such as clock gating and multi-voltage technologies. These enhancements help significantly reduce the power required to transmit the same amount of data, thereby lowering overall power consumption and extending battery life for next-generation mobile devices.

Samsung has designed the UFS 5.0 solution in an ultra-compact package measuring just 7.5 mm × 13 mm × 0.9 mm, a 16.7% reduction in size compared to the previous generation. This form factor enhances design flexibility and internal space utilization for various applications, including mobile devices, wearables, and extended reality (XR) devices.

Samsung will begin mass production of its UFS 5.0 in the fourth quarter of this year, offering capacities up to 1 terabyte (TB). With this breakthrough in UFS 5.0 technology, Samsung plans to expand supply to meet the growth of next-generation device markets, from flagship smartphones to XR headsets and AI wearables.
