Wedoany.com Report-Apr 5, The UK-based company Star Energy has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bring Energy, the largest operator of UK heat networks, to explore the further integration of geothermal energy into the district heating network of Southampton.

Southampton Geothermal Heating Company (SGHC), a pioneering partnership led by Bring Energy and Southampton City Council, is focused on decarbonizing the city’s energy systems. The collaboration aims to develop sustainable heat, chilled water, and power solutions for the city.

Under the MoU, Star Energy will leverage its geothermal expertise to conduct a feasibility study assessing the potential for supplying geothermal heat to the existing network. Additionally, the partnership will explore the development of a new geothermal heat network to serve the northern part of the city.

Southampton is one of the pioneering cities in the UK for geothermal district heating, with a combined heat and power facility established in 1986. The facility currently powers over 70GWh annually, providing low-cost heating and hot water to commercial, public, and residential customers.

Bring Energy operates the scheme in collaboration with Southampton City Council. Richard Burrell, Executive Chairman of Bring Energy, emphasized the importance of decarbonizing urban heat networks and highlighted geothermal energy as a promising solution. He stated, “Decarbonizing urban heat networks is essential for meeting our net zero commitments, and geothermal energy presents an exciting opportunity to achieve this. Partnering with Star Energy allows us to explore how geothermal can integrate into our existing network, providing a sustainable and resilient heat source for Southampton.”

Ross Glover, CEO of Star Energy, added, “By combining Star Energy’s geothermal expertise with Bring Energy’s operational capabilities, we aim to demonstrate the real potential of geothermal energy in decarbonizing urban heat networks. Our feasibility study will be the first step in unlocking a sustainable, long-term heat source for Southampton, supporting the city’s net zero ambitions and enhancing energy security for the future.”
