Manitoba, Canada Invests CAD 4 Million to Build Large-Scale Geothermal Energy Supply System

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 9, the government of Manitoba, Canada announced that it will invest up to CAD 4 million in a large-scale geothermal district energy system for the Southwood Circle mixed-use community in Winnipeg. The project is located near the University of Manitoba's Fort Garry campus and is being developed with the participation of UM Properties GP Inc. It plans to build Manitoba's first large-scale geothermal district energy supply system, providing centralized heating and cooling for new residential and commercial facilities.

The Southwood Circle project is planned to cover approximately 80 acres and will include mid- and high-rise apartments, townhouses, as well as commercial spaces such as retail, hotels, and offices. The Manitoba government stated that the geothermal system is planned to provide heating and cooling services for at least 1,000 new homes by 2028, and is an important component of the province's "Affordable Energy Plan" to expand heat pump applications.

The system will adopt a district geothermal energy supply model, with centralized geothermal infrastructure providing heating and cooling sources to multiple buildings. Compared with independently configuring ground-source heat pumps for individual buildings, a district system can uniformly plan underground heat exchange, heat pump units, and energy supply networks during the early stages of community development, and reduce long-term energy costs through economies of scale. Southwood Circle developer UM Properties GP Inc. will own this geothermal district energy system.

Manitoba's Department of Environment and Climate Change estimates that the system can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 400 to 1,600 tons per year, while reducing reliance on natural gas heating and reducing the concentrated load on the power grid from winter heating in new homes. The project is also part of Manitoba's latest net-zero action plan, which includes 90 specific actions covering energy, transportation, buildings, and agricultural emission reduction measures over the next three years.

The overall development scale of Southwood Circle is larger, with a development period expected to exceed 20 years, and is planned to form approximately 11,000 multi-family homes, along with large-scale office, retail, and public spaces. The first batch of homes is planned to be occupied around 2028, and the geothermal energy supply system will be deployed in phases along with community construction.

This public funding investment of up to CAD 4 million moves the Southwood Circle geothermal project from community sustainable planning further into the stage of specific energy infrastructure implementation. Subsequent engineering will involve equipment and construction needs such as geothermal well fields, underground heat exchange systems, heat pump units, district heating and cooling networks, building heat exchange stations, and control systems.
