en.Wedoany.com Reported - The first phase of the UK's new A1331 link road has officially opened as planned, marking a new stage in this infrastructure project supporting future development along the Tendring and Colchester border.

Once fully completed, the A1331 will provide a direct connection between the A120 and the A133, helping to deliver up to 7,500 new homes planned for the Tendring Colchester Borders Garden Community. The road will work in conjunction with the proposed Rapid Transit System, ensuring transport infrastructure is in place ahead of major residential development. The project is funded by Homes England.
Phase one, delivered by Octavius Infrastructure over an 18-month construction period, includes over a mile of dual carriageway extending from a new roundabout on the A133. The works also feature dedicated pedestrian and cycle paths, additional roundabouts, and access routes that will eventually connect to the larger development. On the environmental front, the project has planted over 40,000 trees and shrubs through extensive landscaping efforts.
Councillor Russell Quirk, Deputy Leader of Essex County Council, stated that the plan demonstrates a commitment to ensuring high-quality infrastructure is in place to support future housing, employment, and community facilities, and thanked residents for their patience during construction. Councillor Mark Webster, Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure, added that work will continue over the coming months with Homes England, local partners, and developers to advance the next phase.
The next phase aims to complete the connection between the A133 and the A120. Funding of £65 million for this phase was confirmed in March, with construction expected to be completed by mid-2030.
