en.Wedoany.com Reported - The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) recently announced a $24 million allocation through the state's Grid Enhancement Technologies (GETs) program to advance innovative transmission and distribution solutions, aiming to improve grid performance and reliability while more efficiently integrating renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

"As New York's power system continues to evolve, improving how electricity is managed, delivered, and utilized is critical to maximizing the performance of existing grid infrastructure and creating greater value for consumers," said Doreen M. Harris, President and CEO of NYSERDA. "NYSERDA looks forward to receiving concept papers that demonstrate how emerging products and solutions can enhance grid efficiency, strengthen reliability and resilience, and help reduce system costs—ensuring New Yorkers benefit from a smarter, more flexible energy system that maximizes the use of our existing energy resources."

The program follows a two-step competitive process. Applicants must first submit concept papers for evaluation, and those selected will be invited to submit full proposals. NYSERDA encourages teams comprising commercial companies, manufacturers, research institutions, universities, government agencies, and end users to participate. Concept papers must cover one or more of the 14 eligible topic areas listed in the solicitation announcement and include a clear commercial deployment plan demonstrating cost-effectiveness and benefits to New York State residents. Final selected projects may receive up to $3 million in funding, with a minimum cost-sharing ratio of 50%, and projects must be led by a New York State-based company or involve actual work conducted in New York State communities.

The rolling submission deadline for concept papers is September 7, 2029, with full proposals due by November 19, 2029, or until funds are fully allocated.

"As demand continues to grow, New York's aging grid faces increasing pressure, necessitating the construction of substantial additional infrastructure over time to ensure reliable operation of the energy system," noted Rory M. Christian, Chair and CEO of the New York State Public Service Commission. "This funding, provided through a competitive process, will support innovative grid enhancement technologies that improve the efficiency of both existing and new infrastructure and help alleviate the growing cost burden on New York electricity users."

The program was developed collaboratively by multiple New York State joint utility companies through the Advanced Technology Working Group, including Con Edison, Central Hudson Gas & Electric, National Grid, New York State Electric and Gas, Rochester Gas & Electric, and Orange & Rockland, aiming to address the impacts of renewable energy integration on transmission and distribution systems. Since 2016, the GETs program has allocated approximately $128 million to 178 grid technology companies and research institutions for projects such as low-cost, high-precision grid sensors, modeling and simulation tools, and advanced engineering solutions.

This allocation is part of NYSERDA's Innovation and Research program, which invests over $96 million annually, leveraging $15 in additional investment for every $1 spent. The funding originates from the New York State Public Service Commission's 2025 Innovation and Research Order, covering the statewide clean energy innovation and research plan from 2026 to 2030.
