Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 9, Skanska, a prominent construction and project development firm, has been awarded a $102 million contract by the California Department of Transportation to improve State Route 78 in San Diego County, California, USA. The project targets a section of the highway stretching from Interstate 5 (I-5) to just under one mile east of Interstate 15 (I-15). Work is scheduled to begin in April 2025 and conclude by December 2026, aiming to enhance safety and functionality along this key roadway.
The project includes rehabilitating more than 40 lane-miles of road.
The scope of the contract includes several upgrades. Skanska will construct an eastbound acceleration lane and rehabilitate over 40 lane-miles of the road’s surface structure. The project also involves installing new kerb ramps that meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, ensuring accessibility. Additional enhancements include modern Midwest Guardrail systems, beyond gore paving, and new bridge barriers, all designed to improve the highway’s safety and operational efficiency.
This initiative falls under the State Route 78 State Highway Operations and Protection Program, reflecting a commitment to maintaining and upgrading vital transportation infrastructure. Upon completion, the improvements are expected to provide a smoother, safer travel experience for users of this busy corridor in Southern California.
Skanska operates extensively in Europe and North America, delivering a range of construction and development projects. This contract follows other recent agreements secured by the company. In Sweden, Skanska partnered with the Municipality of Landskrona to build a football stadium with a 6,800-person capacity, suitable for top-division matches, alongside an indoor swim center. In the United States, Skanska signed a deal with Sutter Health last month to convert a 60,000-square-foot office building in Pleasanton into an ambulatory surgery center and specialty clinic. Meanwhile, in Vesterøya, Norway, the company is constructing a 9,400-square-meter school campus.
The State Route 78 project underscores Skanska’s expertise in infrastructure development and its ongoing efforts to support regional improvements. A company representative emphasized the significance of the work, stating: “This contract reflects our dedication to enhancing transportation networks and ensuring they meet modern safety standards.” The upgrades in San Diego County will contribute to better road conditions and accessibility, aligning with broader goals for sustainable and efficient infrastructure.
