en.Wedoany.com Reported - British Airways celebrates the 80th anniversary of its transatlantic service on July 1, 2026. The first London to New York route was operated in 1946 by British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), with stops in Shannon and Gander, taking nearly 20 hours using a Lockheed Constellation 049 aircraft, arriving at New York's LaGuardia Airport. Today, the airline serves 27 destinations in the US, operating over 20,500 flights to and from the US in the summer, offering more flights from the US than any other European airline.

Since its inaugural flight, British Airways has been at the forefront of transatlantic travel, having operated the supersonic Concorde, invented the flat-bed business class seat, and built one of the world's most enduring and extensive transatlantic route networks. New York, its first US destination, remains a hub in its global network.

Sean Doyle, Chairman and CEO of British Airways, said reaching 80 years of flying to the US is a proud moment. From the first London to New York flight to today's comprehensive network, the commitment to connecting people, cultures, and businesses across the Atlantic has never been stronger. This year is particularly significant as the US celebrates its 250th anniversary and hosts global football events, and the airline continues to invest in the customer experience to shape the future of transatlantic travel.
At Newark Liberty International Airport, British Airways is investing $15 million to fully redevelop its lounge, introducing a new design concept inspired by the New Jersey coastline and the state's industrial heritage, while incorporating British Airways' iconic style. In collaboration with global architecture and design firm Gensler, the renovated lounge will feature a new full-service bar, upgraded dining and food service areas, and an upgraded Concorde dining space for eligible customers. Customers will also benefit from fully renovated bathrooms and shower facilities, as well as floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the runway. Locally sourced materials, furniture, and finishes will be used to reflect the Garden State's character. Development is expected to begin later this year, with the new lounge reopening in 2027.
British Airways also plans future lounge investments in Boston and San Francisco in 2027. These projects are part of a broader investment plan for its global lounge network, including London Heathrow and other US locations.
Looking ahead, British Airways continues its multi-billion dollar transformation plan, including the rollout of high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi, enhancing operational performance, and introducing a new first-class cabin design.
