en.Wedoany.com Reported - Pembina Pipeline announced on Thursday that it will proceed with its Greenlight Power Center project in Alberta, valued at C$4.6 billion (US$3.24 billion). The project is designed to provide electricity for the development of a large data center for an unnamed client.
The Calgary-based company—Calgary Pipeline Company—stated that it has made a final investment decision on the Greenlight project. This 932-megawatt natural gas power plant will be built in Sturgeon County. Pembina, in partnership with Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners and Kineticor Asset Management, did not disclose the name of the client building the center but noted that it will be the first data center of its kind in Canada.
In a press release, Pembina highlighted that the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and cloud computing is driving sustained global demand for data center capacity, and that Alberta has established itself as a prime destination for attracting significant investment. Canada currently has five operational "hyperscale" data centers, each requiring at least 50 megawatts of power capacity. Across Canada, nearly 100 hyperscale data centers are under development, with almost 90% located in Alberta. The province has been promoting its cheap natural gas reserves to attract tech companies, including U.S. hyperscale operators.
Pembina has signed a long-term tolling agreement with its client and expects the project to be completed by the end of 2030. The company stated that the project will require 150 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, helping to create demand for natural gas producers in Western Canada.
