en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Khyber Group has launched Khyber Aquaculture in Kashmir, establishing India's largest Himalayan trout farming facility based on a fully integrated Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS).
Located in Akhal, Kangan, Ganderbal district of Kashmir, along the Sindh River, the RAS facility spans 3.2 hectares with an investment exceeding INR 1 billion (approximately USD 11 million). The Khyber Group stated that the project aims to transform the region's trout industry into a comprehensive, export-oriented ecosystem by integrating advanced aquaculture technology with local farming communities.
The facility employs a technology-driven trout farming model, enabling year-round production in a climate-controlled environment through water reuse and recirculation. Khyber Aquaculture currently has a capacity of 1,500 tons, with plans to reach an annual output of 7,000 tons within three to five years; its hatchery can produce up to 20 million fingerlings annually.
Umar Tramboo, Chairman and Managing Director of Khyber Aquaculture, stated that the facility is part of an expansion of cold-water aquaculture facilities in the Jammu and Kashmir region. He noted that the cluster model aims to integrate production, hatchery, processing, and the supply chain, with plans to support over 300 local farmers under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme through modern aquaculture systems and market access.
