en.Wedoany.com Reported - A consortium comprising Italy's Itinera S.p.A. (40%), Saipem S.p.A. (35%), and ICM S.p.A. (25%) has been awarded the design and construction contract for Lot 4 of Romania's A8 "Unirii" Highway. The contract, granted by the National Company for Road Investments (CNIR), is valued at approximately €700 million, with Saipem's share amounting to around €245 million.
The project section spans approximately 21 kilometers, of which about 5 kilometers are located within the Republic of Moldova, aiming to connect the northeastern Romanian city of Iași with the Republic of Moldova. The scope of work includes approximately 14 structures (bridges, viaducts, and underpasses), three interchanges, a 500-meter-long cut-and-cover tunnel, and a twin-tube tunnel approximately 1.7 kilometers in length. This lot is part of the master plan for the A8 highway linking Târgu Neamț, Iași, and Ungheni, with a total planned length exceeding 300 kilometers. This strategic infrastructure is integrated into the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and is funded by the European SAFE (Secure Action for Europe) program.
The award of this project highlights the capabilities of the three Italian companies—Itinera, Saipem, and ICM—in the field of sustainable infrastructure and further strengthens their respective operations in the Romanian market. Itinera has completed several major road projects in Romania, including the Satu Mare bypass and the Bucharest ring road; Saipem is involved in the offshore Neptun Deep gas development project in the Black Sea and operates a technical center in Ploiești focused on advanced welding technologies; ICM has also been operating in Romania for many years through its local entities.
