en.Wedoany.com Reported - Iberdrola has officially commissioned its Fénix solar photovoltaic plant in Sicily, Italy, with an installed capacity of 243 megawatts. The plant is expected to generate approximately 400,000 megawatt-hours of electricity annually, meeting the equivalent yearly electricity needs of over 140,000 households.

The Fénix plant spans the municipalities of Centuripe, Belpasso, and Paternò, located across the provinces of Enna and Catania. The project aims to enhance Italy's renewable energy resources, connecting to the grid via 26 kilometers of medium-voltage lines and 9 kilometers of high-voltage lines.

At the peak of construction, over 500 professionals were deployed on site, and more than 413,000 bifacial photovoltaic modules were installed. The plant's output is primarily allocated to several Italian companies through long-term power purchase agreements, which aim to stabilize energy costs for industrial customers, ensure supply security, and support competitiveness.

The official inauguration ceremony of the Fénix plant was led by Hugh Elliott, Executive President of Iberdrola Energía Internacional, and Valerio Faccenda, Country Manager of Iberdrola Italia. The event was attended by Miguel Ángel Fernández-Palacios Martínez, the Spanish Ambassador to Italy, along with regional and local officials.

Iberdrola stated that the Fénix plant will boost Italy's clean energy generation capacity, with most of its electricity to be used through contracts with Italian companies. In February 2024, Iberdrola selected German engineering firm IB Vogt to build the Fénix solar project. Last month, Iberdrola also commissioned the 195 MW Tâmega Norte wind farm in Portugal, located between the municipalities of Cabeceiras de Basto and Montalegre, in the Braga and Vila Real regions.
