en.Wedoany.com Reported - Irish aircraft lessor Avolon has received board approval to acquire delivery slots for 11 Airbus A321neo aircraft from Frontier Airlines. Avolon's parent company, Bohai Leasing Co., Ltd., disclosed the transaction in a regulatory filing submitted to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE) on July 1, 2026.

According to the filing, an Avolon subsidiary signed an agreement with Frontier Airlines on June 30, 2026, to acquire delivery slots for 11 A321neo aircraft, scheduled for delivery from November 2026 to June 2027. Bohai Leasing noted that based on Airbus's 2018 list prices, the reference value of these aircraft is approximately $1.425 billion, while the actual purchase price was not disclosed. The acquisition aims to expand Avolon's order book and aircraft portfolio, enhancing its competitiveness in the global leasing market. The filing confirmed that, under Chinese regulations, this transaction does not constitute a related-party transaction or a major asset restructuring and does not require shareholder approval.

Frontier Airlines did not specify the reason for transferring the orders in the filing. Such practices are increasingly common in the industry—airlines adjust orders based on growth expectations, financial conditions, and delivery schedules. Transferring production slots to lessors can unlock this scarce resource while preserving financial flexibility. With current supply constraints for next-generation narrowbody aircraft and extended manufacturer delivery timelines, recent Airbus production slots have themselves become high-value assets. Avolon may subsequently allocate these aircraft based on customer demand.

Headquartered in Dublin, Avolon is one of the world's leading aircraft lessors, managing a portfolio of approximately 600 owned and managed aircraft, with hundreds more Airbus and Boeing models on order. Acquiring near-term delivery slots aligns with its strategy to expand its order book and meet airline demand for next-generation aircraft. Based in Denver, Frontier Airlines is one of North America's largest ultra-low-cost carriers, operating an all-Airbus fleet of over 170 aircraft, primarily A320neo and A321neo models, serving approximately 100 destinations across the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. After adjusting its orders, Frontier still retains over 140 A321neo aircraft on order, continuing its fleet modernization plan to reduce unit costs and increase capacity with larger, more fuel-efficient aircraft.

This transaction reflects a broader trend in commercial aviation. Due to production bottlenecks at Airbus and Boeing, delivery slots are sold out for years, making aircraft order positions a strategic asset. Airlines frequently monetize portions of their order books during periods of excess capacity, while lessors actively acquire valuable near-term delivery slots to meet sustained high demand for next-generation aircraft.
