en.Wedoany.com Reported - Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits, a U.S. beverage distributor, has adopted a narrow aisle layout strategy to maximize warehouse space while controlling upfront costs for new projects, avoiding high expenses for off-site storage.

Space constraints are a common challenge for distribution centers. For Southern Glazer's, wide aisle designs offer maximum operational flexibility, but when more inventory needs to be stored, off-site storage becomes a costly alternative. Mike Bratcher, Vice President of Operational Transformation at the company, stated that most older wide aisle facilities rely on off-site storage to supplement the main distribution center's capacity shortfall, which is extremely costly from both transportation and inventory turnover perspectives. The narrow aisle strategy helps strike a balance between building moderately sized facilities to accommodate future growth and controlling upfront investments.

Southern Glazer's has been applying narrow aisle layouts for about 15 years, not only to control costs but also to maximize space in existing facilities. Bratcher explained that the company's business is seasonal, requiring some flexibility in inbound storage needs, so shifting from standard aisles to narrow aisles improves space utilization.

In terms of equipment selection, articulated forklifts have become the company's primary tool. These forklifts combine the versatility of traditional forklifts with the ability to operate in narrow aisles, moving directly from the receiving dock to narrow aisle areas without the need for pallet handoffs. Bratcher noted that articulated forklifts are suitable for small to medium-sized warehouses or facilities that need to perform multiple tasks, handling receiving, storage, picking, and loading operations. For large-scale operations requiring high-density storage, very narrow aisle (VNA) turret trucks are another option, but their equipment and infrastructure costs are higher, typically requiring wire and rail guidance systems.
