en.Wedoany.com Reported - The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded over $76 million to Virginia for four transportation infrastructure projects, two of which are passenger rail projects. The funding comes from the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) program.

The Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission received $25 million to renovate the L'Enfant station of the Virginia Railway Express and add a fourth main track between L'Enfant and the Virginia interlocking. According to a press release from the office of U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, these improvements will enhance capacity for commuter and intercity passenger rail.

Another $25 million was awarded to the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority for the construction of the Richmond Layover Facility. This facility is planned as overnight storage and maintenance space, with the project including three storage tracks, a maintenance platform, a covered maintenance pit, upgrades to existing signal systems, road improvements, parking lots, and on-site buildings.

Virginia also received BUILD grants for two non-rail projects. The City of Lynchburg will receive $24.5 million for the intersection improvement project at U.S. Route 501 and U.S. Route 221; Middlesex County will receive approximately $1.6 million to advance the redevelopment of the Broad Creek working waterfront.
