These trains operate under the Cityjet brand, primarily for suburban and regional transport, with a design maximum speed of 160 km/h and high acceleration, making them suitable for networks with short station distances and high service frequencies. The trains are mainly manufactured and assembled in Austria and Germany, with final assembly carried out at the ÖBB Technical Services facility in Jedlersdorf.

Siemens Mobility has supplied two variants for ÖBB: one for large urban areas such as Vienna, and another for regional traffic. The platform now serves operational routes across all nine federal states of Austria, as well as regular cross-border services between Burgenland and Hungary. The trains feature a low-floor design, enabling step-free boarding at Austria's 550 mm high platforms; for lower platforms, retractable steps and lifting platforms are provided on each side. The interior includes multifunctional zones, dedicated bicycle spaces, and adjustable seats, along with a modern passenger information system. In terms of technical specifications, the urban variant accommodates 244 seats, while the regional variant offers 259 seats, with an axle load of less than 17 metric tons. The trains comply with current collision and fire safety standards.

Upon completion of the project, Siemens and ÖBB will deliver a total of 294 Desiro ML trains to ÖBB and 15 to Raaberbahn. Siemens Mobility also highlights the platform's energy efficiency and its potential for expansion into battery-hybrid solutions to meet operational needs on non-electrified lines.
