en.Wedoany.com Reported - Scandlines' new charging tower at the Port of Puttgarden is ready to provide charging services for its ferries. The project involved laying 11 kilometers of cable from the substation in Burg to the ferry terminal to establish the required 15-megawatt connection capacity at the port.

With the charging tower completed and cables in place, power can now be supplied to the new freight ferry "The Baltic Whale" and other ferries being converted to plug-in hybrid vessels. This means ferries can now be charged on both sides of the Fehmarn Belt. As a result, charging time for "The Baltic Whale" at each port has been reduced to just 12 to 15 minutes. The ferry can now operate more frequently between Puttgarden and Rødby, powered by electricity.

Previously, the ferry completed two-hour and three-hour round trips, but now it operates regularly every two hours, 24 hours a day, six days a week. The ferry takes only 45 minutes to complete the crossing, the same as other ferries on the route.

Scandlines expressed sincere gratitude to the European Union for co-funding the investment in shore power connections at Puttgarden under the "Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Transport Programme," including grid expansion, and also thanked Schleswig-Holstein Netz for its efforts in building the charger infrastructure.
