India's AESL Wins Rs 47 Billion Transmission Project

(AESL) confirmed that it had won a transmission project in Maharashtra, with an estimated capital expenditure of approximately Rs 47 billion. The project will build a transmission system capable of carrying up to 4,500 MW of renewable energy and pumped storage power, with an overall implementation period of 36 months.

The full name of the project is "Western Region Grid Expansion—Part A to Meet Up to 4,500 MW Pumped Storage Potential Near Satara." AESL emerged as the lowest bidder through tariff-based competitive bidding, and the project will be executed by the special purpose vehicle Satara Power Transmission Ltd. According to the tender documents, the successful bidder is required to acquire 100% equity of the SPV along with its related assets and liabilities, and subsequently undertake the construction and operation of the transmission facilities.

The project will add 562 circuit kilometers of transmission lines and 9,000 MVA of transformation capacity, mainly including the construction of a new 765/400 kV Satara substation, the construction of a 765 kV double-circuit transmission line from Kolhapur to Satara, the upgrade of the Kolhapur pooling station, and the configuration of corresponding line bays, busbars, reactors, and other facilities.

The transmission system will be implemented in two phases. Phase I corresponds to a cumulative transfer capacity of 1,800 MW, involving the addition of 765 kV facilities and two 1,500 MVA main transformers at the Kolhapur gas-insulated substation, and the construction of a new 765/400 kV substation at Satara equipped with three 1,500 MVA main transformers. The work will also involve tapping the 765 kV double-circuit line from Pune-III to Pune East into the Satara substation.

Phase II will increase the system's carrying capacity to a cumulative 4,500 MW, involving the construction of the second 400 kV busbar section at the Satara substation, the addition of a fourth 1,500 MVA main transformer, and the completion of the 765 kV double-circuit line from Kolhapur to Satara. The minimum implementation periods for the two phases are 30 months and 36 months, respectively.

Upon completion, the project will create a new 765 kV inter-regional transmission corridor connecting the southern and western grids of India, enabling the transfer of renewable energy from Karnataka to load centers in Maharashtra, and connecting to planned pumped storage facilities around Satara, Pune, and the Mumbai metropolitan area. India's Central Electricity Authority recommended the project on February 25, 2026, and the Ministry of Power approved the competitive bidding route on March 24, designating PFC Consulting Limited to organize the bidding process.

According to AESL, with this project included, the company's transmission project pipeline stands at approximately Rs 850 billion. Upon completion of the project, its transmission network is expected to expand to 29,739 circuit kilometers, with transformation capacity increasing to 143,425 MVA.
