en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Port of Portland has announced the official completion of the main terminal reconstruction at Portland International Airport (PDX), the largest public infrastructure project in Oregon's history. The $2.15 billion, 11-year project was completed on schedule and within budget, without closing the facility during construction.

The reconstruction enhances airport capacity and seismic resilience, while introducing energy-saving measures and optimizing passenger flow. The main terminal rebuild is part of the PDX Next capital investment plan, which also includes upgrades to boarding bridges, parking facilities, and a new rental car center.

The adjusted passenger circulation route features new exit passages, reducing walking distances between gates, baggage claim areas, and landside zones. The interior layout has been reconfigured to expand restroom facilities and circulation space, improving accessibility. Retail and dining options at the terminal have been significantly expanded, adding 27 local brands alongside existing Oregon-based businesses. The airport also features a series of public art installations, including works reflecting regional cultural and historical themes.

Sustainability features are part of the completed project. The terminal incorporates a large timber roof structure built with locally sourced materials and extensive glass curtain walls to maximize natural daylight. The Port Authority stated that energy consumption per square foot has been reduced compared to the previous terminal infrastructure, partly due to a geothermal heat pump system scheduled for full operation by the end of 2026. The reconstruction also integrates biophilic design elements, including indoor greenery and natural materials.

Curtis Robinhold, Executive Director of the Port of Portland, stated that the project was centered on a new PDX from the outset, with the final result shaped by local craftsmanship, local creativity, and local pride. The completed terminal reserves capacity for future growth, with a long-term planning goal of reaching 35 million annual passengers by 2045. With construction complete, the airport will proceed with further incremental upgrades to baggage handling systems and passenger processing areas.
