en.Wedoany.com Reported - On July 13, 2026, Peru's state-owned oil company Petroperú increased its diesel and gasoline storage capacity by 1.68 million gallons by adding infrastructure to the Iquitos Refinery (Refinería Iquitos). This initiative aims to enhance the refinery's operational independence and more effectively address the energy demands of the Peruvian Amazon region, where product transportation relies heavily on rivers and is susceptible to disruptions from climate factors such as low water levels.

The Iquitos Refinery, located along the Amazon River in the province of Maynas, provides critical support for fuel supply in Loreto, San Martín, and parts of Ucayali. Its production meets local basic needs in electricity supply, river transportation, industrial and agricultural production, and air commuting, in a region with very limited transportation and communication conditions.

Since Loreto is not yet connected to the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN), its household electricity, hospital operations, and commercial and industrial services rely primarily on liquid fuels, making the refinery's energy infrastructure highly significant for the region.

The Iquitos Refinery has a crude oil processing capacity of 12,000 barrels per day, while also supplying fuel to vessels traveling between Amazon communities, as rivers being the primary mode of transportation in the area. The refinery also provides Turbo A-1 aviation kerosene for civilian and institutional aviation, helping to maintain integration in remote and border areas.

With this storage expansion, Petroperú aims to improve fuel accessibility and strengthen energy security in the Peruvian Amazon, thereby ensuring more timely supply support for economic and social activities in the region.
