Mingyang Presents Semi-transparent PV Panels
Wedoany.com Report-May 17, Mingyang, a Chinese solar manufacturer, debuted at Intersolar Europe, presenting its innovative semi-transparent photovoltaic (PV) modules based on cadmium telluride (CdTe) cells. The company highlighted its advancements in integrating thin-film solar technology with glass architecture, targeting applications in building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV).
Zhibo Jack Zhao, general manager of Mingyang Thin Film Technology and CTO of the solar division, shared insights on the company’s exploration of perovskite technology for glass modules. Zhao stated: “The pilot line was set up at the end of 2024 and initial production began this year. We are still in the testing phase, but the first commercial devices should be available by the end of this year.”
Mingyang’s CdTe modules are offered in four transparency levels. The fully opaque model (0% transparency) delivers 115 watts per square meter under standard conditions at 25°C. The 20% transparent model produces 92 watts, the 40% model yields 69 watts, and the 60% model generates 46 watts. These modules are designed to operate in temperatures ranging from -40°C to +85°C and come with a 10-year product warranty and a 25-year performance warranty, with a 2% degradation in the first year and 0.5% annually thereafter.
Zhao noted that the cell price is approximately $50 per square meter, with additional costs for glass, electrical systems, and assembly varying by project. He added: “90% of our orders are custom-made,” emphasizing Mingyang’s focus on tailored solutions. The company collaborates with partners to supply glass suited to specific project requirements.
Mingyang aims to expand into the European market by forming partnerships, particularly in the BIPV sector. The manufacturer seeks to work with European companies experienced in BIPV to align with regional standards and preferences. Available products include neutral and colored semi-transparent modules, as well as solar blind technology integrated into glass modules. These blinds, powered by PV cells and supported by a lithium-ion battery, ensure a consistent energy supply for small motors.
The company’s participation in Intersolar Europe underscores its commitment to advancing solar technology for architectural applications. By combining CdTe and emerging perovskite technologies, Mingyang is positioning itself as a key player in the global BIPV market, offering customizable, high-performance solutions for sustainable building designs.
