en.Wedoany.com Reported - Adapture Renewables, a US utility-scale solar and energy storage developer under the Lego founding family, announced that its Cherry Valley Solar Project in Cross County, Arkansas, has been completed and is now commercially operational. With a capacity of 185 megawatts, the operator stated that it can generate enough clean electricity annually to meet the power needs of approximately 30,000 Arkansas households.
Adapture Renewables' financing for the Cherry Valley project is based on three Environmental Attribute Purchase Agreements (EAPAs) signed with Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. Through these agreements, Meta will procure 330 megawatts of renewable energy in Arkansas and Illinois. Most renewable energy purchase agreements do not directly supply power to specific companies, but this investment provides financial support for more renewable energy to be fed into the overall grid. Environmental Attribute Purchase Agreements allow companies to purchase or trade the green benefits of renewable energy projects, separating attributes such as energy certificates from actual electricity purchases.
The developer is wholly owned by KIRKBI, a privately held investment company owned by the Kirk Kristiansen family, part of the founding family of Lego, the toy brick manufacturer. Founded in 1995, the company initially aimed to protect the Lego brand while allowing the family to maintain control over the business and diversify investments into global industries, including energy.
Lego itself is pursuing emission reduction efforts, targeting a 37% reduction in its direct carbon footprint by 2032 and installing a 22-megawatt ground-mounted solar power system at its 1.7 million-square-foot manufacturing facility in Virginia.
The 185 MW Cherry Valley project serves as the foundation for Adapture's Titanium portfolio, which consists of three sites with a total capacity of 441 megawatts, also including the 128 MW Cooks Mill Solar Project and the 128 MW Crooked Creek Solar Phase I. Adapture stated that the portfolio's total generation can meet the electricity needs of 71,000 households annually.
Adapture Renewables CEO Thomas Houghton said in a statement that the commercial operation of the Cherry Valley Solar Project highlights the company's ability to deliver scalable clean energy projects, enhance regional grid reliability, and create tangible economic impacts at the local level. Over its lifecycle, the project is expected to generate $16 million in local economic impact through land royalties and taxes, funding public services and infrastructure.
In alignment with its parent company KIRKBI, the Lego brand is advancing a broader renewable energy vision, committing to increase its US sustainability investments to $1.4 billion over three years.
