en.Wedoany.com Reported - Seaspan and Maersk are advancing a comprehensive efficiency improvement program covering 18 long-term chartered vessels.
The two companies stated that the project aims to achieve quantifiable improvements in fuel efficiency, cargo capacity, operational flexibility, and emission reduction. A key focus is the joint development of high-impact retrofit solutions for four 13,000 TEU vessels, which partners describe as one of the most significant upgrades in the Seaspan-Maersk time-charter fleet.
To date, total investment in completed or ongoing upgrades for these 18 vessels amounts to approximately $75 million, with further planned initiatives on the horizon.
Additionally, Maersk has signed a non-binding memorandum of cooperation with COSCO Shipyard and WattSpan, a strategic maritime technology and engineering joint venture partner of Seaspan. The agreement establishes a one-year collaboration framework covering vessel upgrades, energy efficiency improvements, and maritime decarbonization technologies, with specific measures including joint development, information sharing, and execution of future projects under separate commercial agreements.
Dimitrios Panagopoulos, Chief Fleet Operations Officer at Seaspan, stated that this partnership exemplifies the practical and high-impact collaboration needed to drive decarbonization in the shipping industry. Through close cooperation with Maersk, WattSpan, and COSCO Shipyard, the parties are combining technical expertise, operational experience, and long-term investment to improve current vessel performance while preparing for the adoption of future fuels and technologies.
