en.Wedoany.com Reported - Transport for NSW will upgrade a five-kilometer section of the Mitchell Highway northwest of Nyngan, replacing three culverts and reinforcing the road surface. Built in the 1960s, the section has experienced significant deformation and unevenness due to prolonged use by heavy vehicles and adverse weather conditions. Damien Pfeiffer, Executive Director of Transport for NSW, stated that the upgrade aims to improve road user safety and reduce future maintenance costs.
Construction will commence next week and be carried out in two phases between John Butler Road and West Bogan Road. The first phase will extend three culverts and enhance the highway's flood resilience, expected to take approximately three months. The second phase will reinforce and widen the two intersections, adding right-turn lanes. The project will be delivered by Bogan Shire Council on behalf of Transport for NSW.
During construction, the speed limit will be reduced to 40 km/h, and single-lane closures will be implemented to ensure the safety of workers and drivers. This section is a key route connecting towns in western New South Wales, with high daily usage by local residents, tourists, and freight operators.
