en.Wedoany.com Reported - A £12 million bogie exchange facility has been opened at Cardiff Canton railway depot to maintain and service Transport for Wales' new train fleet.

Funded by the Welsh Government through Transport for Wales, the facility enables engineers to safely and efficiently remove, repair, and replace wheels and underframe equipment beneath train carriages.

Previously, trains requiring specialist maintenance had to be transported off-site; now, repairs can be completed on-site, allowing trains to return to service more quickly. Transport for Wales Chief Infrastructure Officer Dan Tipper said the bogie exchange facility represents a significant milestone in transforming rail services across Wales and the borders, as bringing specialist maintenance capabilities in-house can significantly reduce repair times and improve day-to-day reliability. The bogie exchange facility will serve communities across South Wales, playing a key role particularly when increased maintenance is needed due to autumn leaf fall and adverse weather conditions. This investment reflects the Welsh Government's policy direction to strengthen local rail maintenance capacity and reduce reliance on external facilities.
