en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Portuguese Council of Ministers recently approved the tender for a new sub-concession of the Porto Metro, covering the Pink Line and the Ruby Line currently under construction, with the possibility of including the Gondomar and Trofa lines in the future. António Leitão Amaro, Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, stated after the government meeting that the existing concession expires next year, necessitating an immediate launch of a new tender, which includes the Pink Line and the Ruby Line already under construction, and may later involve the Gondomar and Trofa lines.
Leitão Amaro did not disclose the specific amount but noted that due to the increase in the number of lines and operational scale, state expenditure will rise compared to the previous sub-concession. The current total concession expenditure for the Porto Metro is €435.14 million, excluding VAT. The network is currently operated under concession by ViaPorto (a company under the Barraqueiro Group), with the previous contract taking effect in 2018, initially for a term of seven years, originally set to expire on March 31, 2025. Based on the two-year extension possibility stipulated in the contract, this sub-concession has been approved for an extension, now lasting until March 2027.
The Porto Metro currently has six lines and 85 stations, with a network spanning approximately 70 kilometers. Among the two new lines under construction, the Pink Line connects São Bento Station and Casa da Música Station, linking the Blue, Red, Green, Purple, Orange, and Yellow lines, and is expected to begin operations by the end of the first quarter of 2027. The Ruby Line connects Casa da Música Station and Santo Ovídio Station, and was removed from the Recovery and Resilience Plan following a re-announcement in May 2026, with the initial timeline projecting completion by July 2028.
In 2025, the Porto Metro recorded 94.54 million ticket validations, an increase of 5.4% compared to 2024.
