en.Wedoany.com Reported - Best Buy is accelerating its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, covering its operational footprint and all physical stores. As the latest step in this process, the retailer has brought two new solar sites online in New York and California.
In Long Island City, New York, the Best Buy Solar Garden marks the retailer's first physical store equipped with a rooftop community solar garden. The system features a 371.8-kilowatt layout, generating approximately 461,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually through rooftop solar panels, enough to meet the yearly electricity needs of about 44 households and businesses.
Best Buy stated that subscribers will receive energy credits from the rooftop system (with power allocated to the local grid) through a third-party-managed community solar program.
The Best Buy Solar Field in Dinuba, California, is larger, with a generation capacity sufficient to power 559 homes. Located at Best Buy's Dinuba distribution center, this solar field produces approximately 5.87 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, supporting local operations and reducing overall energy consumption. This new project joins the retailer's previous Little Bear Solar Project in Fresno County, which generates 480,000 megawatt-hours of electricity, meeting the power needs of about 715 stores in California.
Tim Dunn, Best Buy's head of environmental sustainability, stated that these solar projects are one way the company invests in the future of its employees and communities. He noted that since 2009, Best Buy has reduced carbon emissions from its operations by 74% and continues to advance this progress.
Best Buy emphasized that these projects further support its broader sustainability framework by promoting a circular economy while reducing environmental footprint. This framework is committed to ensuring that materials and products are continuously reused rather than sent to landfills, thereby reducing the use of new raw natural resources.
The newly activated solar sites complement Best Buy's existing photovoltaic projects across the United States, including two off-site tax equity solar facilities in Michigan, a 174,000-megawatt-hour solar field in Martin, South Carolina, and two large-scale projects in Texas: the Big Star Solar project (46.8 megawatts) in Bastrop County and the Prospero 2 Best Buy Solar project (331 megawatts) in Andrews County.
