en.Wedoany.com Reported - U.S. advanced microreactor developer NANO Nuclear Energy has joined the Virginia Nuclear Energy Consortium (VNEC), aiming to gain a foothold in one of the fastest-growing electricity markets in the United States. The surging power demand from artificial intelligence data centers is accelerating the deployment of advanced nuclear power in the state.

The KRONOS MMR is one of NANO Nuclear's advanced microreactor designs for future clean energy.

The consortium brings together utilities, universities, technology companies, engineering firms, and policymakers with the goal of collaboratively advancing advanced reactor deployment, cultivating specialized talent, and expanding nuclear manufacturing capabilities. This membership marks NANO Nuclear's formal entry into this nuclear industry collaboration network. Under the agreement, company CEO James Walker will join the VNEC board. NANO Nuclear stated that this will help it establish connections with organizations seeking advanced nuclear power solutions for data centers, industrial facilities, military bases, and other critical infrastructure.

Virginia, home to the world's highest density of data centers and possessing a mature nuclear supply chain, fuel fabrication base, and skilled workforce, has become a frontier for advanced nuclear development and a focal point for deploying advanced small modular reactors. Analysis from NANO Nuclear suggests that its reactor portfolio can support various scenarios, including dedicated power for hyperscale data centers, industrial heat, grid ancillary services, and energy systems for remote areas with weak infrastructure. Virginia's long-term nuclear strategy also plans to expand advanced reactor deployment, strengthen the nuclear supply chain, cultivate a talent pipeline, and enhance research and development capabilities through the Virginia Innovative Nuclear Hub.

Chairman and founder Jay Yu stated that Virginia is arguably the most attractive location in the U.S. for deploying advanced nuclear technology, combining a deep nuclear industrial base, top-tier universities, highly skilled technical talent, significant defense and national security activities, and the world's largest concentration of data centers. He added that joining VNEC gives NANO Nuclear the opportunity to participate in discussions on future nuclear projects while showcasing its diversified portfolio that is not limited to a single reactor technology.

Unlike peers focused solely on reactor design, NANO Nuclear has also expanded its business scope to include nuclear fuel, transportation, and engineering services. Its product line includes the stationary high-temperature gas-cooled microreactor KRONOS MMR (currently in pre-application engagement with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission), the portable solid-core battery reactor ZEUS, and the LOKI MMR for space and extraterrestrial power applications. In the fuel supply chain, subsidiary Advanced Fuel Transportation handles nuclear transport system development, while HALEU Energy Fuel is dedicated to domesticating high-assay low-enriched uranium fuel for advanced reactors.

CEO James Walker noted that the company's overall business direction aligns with Virginia's nuclear energy landscape. VNEC brings together a group of companies, academic institutions, and public sector leaders who, like NANO Nuclear, believe advanced nuclear energy is indispensable for meeting future energy needs. This membership allows NANO Nuclear to integrate into an efficient and collaborative nuclear energy community at the right time. NANO Nuclear stated that this move is part of its broader effort to expand collaboration with utilities, national laboratories, universities, government agencies, and industrial customers, aiming to advance advanced nuclear technology from research and development to commercial application.
