en.Wedoany.com Reported - On July 20, Hawaiian Electric initiated a large-scale renewable energy procurement process in Hawaii, seeking renewable energy, battery storage, and firm generation capacity on the islands of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi Island, and Maui. This renewable energy procurement is part of Hawaii's grid planning process, with related applications submitted to the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission.

The current round of renewable energy procurement targets include approximately 1,650 GWh of variable renewable energy generation, with project types potentially including wind and solar power; 465 MW of grid-forming resources, including combined solutions such as solar with battery storage; and 111 MW of firm generation capacity. Related projects are expected to be operational between 2031 and 2034, aiming to reduce the share of oil-fired generation and support Hawaii's goal of achieving 100% renewable electricity by 2045.

Hawaiian Electric also plans to apply for an accelerated regulatory process to procure up to 500 MW of fuel-flexible firm generation capacity on Oʻahu. The island accounts for over 70% of Hawaii's total electricity consumption, with transportation and industrial electrification driving growth in electricity demand. Following the completion of renewable energy procurement, subsequent focus will center on project bidding, technical evaluation, grid interconnection arrangements, regulatory approvals, and the signing of long-term power contracts.
