The route was announced in September 2025, launched in February 2026 with one weekly Saturday flight, and operated through April 2026.
Breeze's international operations are very limited. For the remainder of this year, the carrier plans an average of just 1.4 daily departures to destinations outside the U.S., with no such flights on some days; only 1 in every 192 departures is international. Airlines worldwide submit schedule changes to platforms such as Cirium Diio and OAG on a weekly basis, including new routes, market cancellations, aircraft type adjustments, operating period changes, and frequency modifications. Breeze's cancellation of this route was confirmed in the latest round of schedule updates.
According to U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) data, Breeze carried only 1,364 round-trip passengers on this route. Among passengers departing from PVD, Breeze held less than an 11% market share, with most travelers choosing connecting flights to earn miles or gain higher frequency, while a significant number of passengers also defected to Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) for nonstop service. DOT data also shows the route's load factor was just 49.8%, less than half. The most recent prior operation of PVD-CUN was Frontier Airlines during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022, which posted a nearly identical load factor of 50.2%.
Breeze's previously filed plans with Cirium showed the route was slated to resume on December 19, 2026, operating through March 20, 2027; December schedules included Saturday and Wednesday flights, reverting to Saturday-only thereafter. Flight times were scheduled for Saturdays with PVD to CUN departing 6:00 a.m. to 9:59 a.m. local time, and CUN to PVD departing 10:59 a.m. to 3:24 p.m. local time. The latest information shows all flights have been removed and can no longer be booked.
PVD-CUN, at 1,466 nautical miles (2,715 kilometers) one-way, was the carrier's second-longest international airport pair. The longest, John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) to Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), is scheduled to launch in January 2027. With this route canceled, Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) to PUJ will become the second-longest, with that route also set to debut the same month. Between August 2026 and March 2027, Breeze plans to operate 13 international routes, including flights from Charleston, New Orleans, Norfolk, PIT, Richmond, and Tampa International Airport (TPA) to CUN; from CMH, PIT, Raleigh/Durham, and TPA to PUJ; and from TPA to Montego Bay, Nassau, and San José (Costa Rica). Several of these are entirely new routes on the carrier's map.
Between December 2026 and March 2027—the period when Breeze had originally planned to operate international flights—non-U.S. flight activity at PVD will be 34% lower than previously expected. Currently, only Cabo Verde Airlines continues to operate international flights at the airport. The African carrier returned to PVD earlier this year, operating nonstop service to Praia (Tuesdays) and Sal (Fridays), with Friday flights continuing on to Praia afterward. The large Cape Verdean American community in Rhode Island and Massachusetts is the reason the carrier serves PVD. The two routes span 2,901 nautical miles (5,374 kilometers) to 2,949 nautical miles (5,462 kilometers) one-way. Due to the relatively short transatlantic crossing, Cabo Verde Airlines returns to Africa during the day: on Tuesdays and Fridays, its Boeing 737 MAX 8 typically departs PVD at 2:30 p.m. and returns at 1:30 a.m. the following day.
