Diraq to Deploy 8-Qubit Quantum Computer at Equinix Data Center in Sydney

The system will feature a silicon chip containing 8 qubits, with cryogenic cooling systems and control electronics fully integrated within the unit. The entire system consumes less than 20kW of power and can be deployed directly in existing commercial data center environments.

The quantum computer deployed in this initiative utilizes silicon spin qubit technology. According to Diraq's system design, the quantum chip, cryogenic refrigeration equipment, and control electronics adopt an integrated configuration, requiring no large-scale modifications to Equinix's existing data center infrastructure during installation. For future expansion of the system's qubit count, Diraq plans to complete upgrades by replacing the quantum chip while keeping peripheral infrastructure unchanged.
Following project installation, Diraq and Equinix will first test system performance in a real commercial data center environment. Testing will include equipment operation under open network connectivity conditions, remote monitoring, and secure integration between the quantum computer and the data center's existing CPU and GPU computing infrastructure. The system will also operate alongside cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure already deployed within the Equinix data center, to validate hybrid computing models combining quantum, AI, and traditional computing resources.
Diraq plans to open the system to industry partners and customers after completing deployment testing. Relevant users will be able to observe equipment operation and conduct potential application testing within the Equinix facility. Equinix's existing enterprise-grade data sovereignty, security, and compliance environment in its data centers will directly serve as the operational foundation for these customer tests.
The quantum chip used in this deployment by Diraq follows a CMOS manufacturing route compatible with traditional semiconductor chips, enabling production at existing semiconductor wafer fabrication facilities. The company's current engineering roadmap is to increase the qubit count per chip while maintaining the reusability of peripheral cryogenic, control, and data center infrastructure. This 8-qubit system will undergo its first round of deployment and operational testing in a commercial data center, with subsequent upgrades continuing through chip replacement.
Upon completion of installation, this system will become Australia's first quantum computer deployed and operated within a commercial data center, and what Diraq describes as the world's first silicon spin quantum computing system operating in a shared commercial data center. The project is currently in the deployment phase, with the next milestone being the completion of installation at the Sydney data center in October 2026, followed by actual operation, network connectivity, and customer testing.
