Wedoany.com Report-Jun 24, Ghella, in collaboration with the Eteria Consortium and C.M.B., has been awarded a €360 million (approximately $414.6 million) contract to extend Milan’s M1 metro line, known as the ‘red line,’ in Italy. The project will add 3.3 kilometers and three new stations to the line, enhancing urban connectivity in the city.
The contract includes safety-related costs and the implementation of the Legality Protocol.
The contract, secured by a temporary joint venture of Ghella, C.M.B., and the Eteria Consortium—comprising Vianini Lavori, Itinera, and I.CO.P.—includes safety measures and compliance with the Legality Protocol. The extension will begin at the existing Bisceglie station, with the entire route running underground to minimize surface disruption.
The project features three new stations—Parri-Valsesia, Baggio, and Olmi—alongside six auxiliary structures. Most of the tunneling will be performed using a tunnel boring machine, designed to reduce impact on the surrounding area. Advanced fire prevention technologies will be integrated to ensure passenger safety.
A Ghella representative stated: “This project reinforces our commitment to delivering high-quality infrastructure that supports urban mobility and safety for Milan’s residents.”
Ghella, a global leader in large-scale public infrastructure, has constructed over 190 tunnels, connecting more than 1,000 kilometers of metro, railway, motorway, and hydraulic systems. Employing over 6,000 people, the company operates across Oceania, Europe, North and South America, and western Asia.
In February 2024, Epiroc provided battery-electric vehicles to the AF Ghella joint venture for a water tunnel project in Oslo, Norway, showcasing Ghella’s focus on sustainable construction. Additionally, in December 2023, Ghella, as part of the Suburban Connect consortium with CPB Contractors and Acciona Construction, won a $3.6 billion contract for the Suburban Rail Loop East tunneling project in Victoria, Australia.
The Milan M1 extension is expected to improve public transportation access in the city’s western region, supporting Milan’s growing urban mobility needs. By leveraging advanced tunneling techniques and safety technologies, the project aligns with modern infrastructure standards, benefiting both residents and visitors.
