Wedoany.com Report-Jun 28, The New South Wales (NSW) state and Australian federal governments have jointly committed A$500 million (approximately $322.26 million) to fund the Mona Vale Road West upgrade, addressing congestion on a vital arterial road in the Northern Beaches region of NSW. The funding, announced on March 22, 2025, by Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King, includes A$250 million from the NSW State Budget matched by an equal contribution from the federal government.

The NSW State Budget has allocated A$250m for the upgrade.

The project will widen a 3.4-kilometer section of Mona Vale Road from two to four lanes, improving connectivity between McCarrs Creek Road in Terrey Hills and Powder Works Road in Ingleside. Key enhancements include a new traffic signal at Kimbriki Road with additional turning lanes and a truck climbing lane, relocated access at Tumburra Street, restricted access at Addison Road, and a new local road connection. The upgrade also prioritizes pedestrian and cyclist facilities with a shared-use path, enhanced street lighting, and landscaping.

To address environmental concerns, the project incorporates a 40-meter fauna bridge and two wildlife underpasses to support local biodiversity. These measures aim to balance infrastructure development with environmental preservation in the region.

NSW Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison stated: “I am delighted to be able to give the green light on this project which will make a real difference to the local community with congestion and safety improvements over 3.4km of one of the busiest arterial routes on the Northern Beaches. I acknowledge the constructive role played by the local state MP, Jacqui Scruby, and the local federal MP, Sophie Scamps, in advocating for this project to be brought forward. This is an example of local representatives working together across the aisle for a good community outcome. The most important thing this announcement delivers is the certainty for the project to proceed. Transport for NSW will now be able to move ahead with critical planning work along this important corridor that has significant biodiversity, terrain and technical challenges to be addressed.”

The Mona Vale Road West upgrade follows recent progress on the A$76 million Mandalong Road project, which entered its detailed design phase in May 2025. The combined efforts reflect a commitment to improving transport infrastructure across NSW, enhancing safety, accessibility, and environmental sustainability for local communities.
