Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 16, On August 13, 2025, the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) unveiled plans to provide nearly $1 billion in funding to enhance technologies for mining, processing, and manufacturing critical minerals and materials, aiming to bolster domestic supply chains and industrial development.
The proposed funding opportunities include the Critical Minerals and Materials Accelerator programme.
The Critical Minerals and Materials Accelerator program will offer up to $50 million through a notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) to advance technologies in rare-earth magnet production, semiconductor materials, lithium extraction, and byproduct utilization, fostering investment and U.S.-based commercialization.
The Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management will allocate approximately $250 million to support U.S. industrial facilities in producing mineral byproducts, including from coal-based operations, to test technologies at scale and minimize risks.
U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright said: “For too long, the United States has relied on foreign actors to supply and process the critical materials that are essential to modern life and our national security. Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, the Energy Department will play a leading role in reshoring the processing of critical materials and expanding our domestic supply of these indispensable resources.”
The Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains (MESC) will issue an NOFO of up to $135 million to strengthen rare earth element (REE) supply chains, focusing on refining and recovering REEs from mine tailings and waste streams, with academic partnerships and a 50% recipient cost-share.
Additionally, MESC plans a $500 million NOFO to support facilities processing, recycling, or manufacturing critical materials, including battery minerals, with a 50% cost-share requirement. The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy will also select projects for a $40 million program to recover minerals from industrial wastewater.
