Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 19, On August 18, Ahmad Idam, head of the services sector at Egypt’s agriculture ministry, reported that Egypt, a major global wheat importer, acquired nearly 4 million tonnes of wheat during its 2025 local harvest. This total, shared with Reuters, surpasses the previous year’s procurement of 3.43 million tonnes by over 500,000 tonnes, reflecting efforts to strengthen food reserves.

The government aimed to purchase between 4 million and 5 million tonnes from a local harvest estimated at 10 million tonnes, with the harvesting season running from mid-April to mid-August. Ahmad Idam stated: “The successful completion of the local procurement season is an important step to ensure stability in the domestic market.” This increase supports Egypt’s strategy to maintain reliable grain supplies for its population.

To meet its food security needs, Egypt imports approximately 5 million tonnes of wheat annually to supplement local production. These imports bolster strategic reserves and support the nation’s subsidized grain system, which is vital for ensuring affordable food access. The uptick in local procurement this year may reduce reliance on imported wheat, though external supplies remain essential to meet demand.

Egypt’s focus on expanding local wheat purchases aligns with its broader goal of stabilizing the domestic market. By enhancing its reserves, the country seeks to balance import needs while supporting its subsidized food programs. Idam emphasized that the government will continue to monitor global grain markets to plan future import strategies effectively.

This year’s procurement success underscores Egypt’s commitment to securing consistent food supplies, promoting economic stability, and supporting the well-being of its population through strategic agricultural efforts.
