Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 18, Tesla has issued a recall for its Powerwall 2 battery energy storage systems in Australia due to safety concerns after reports of units catching fire. The issue, linked to a batch of lithium-ion battery cells sourced from a third-party supplier, has caused some Powerwall 2 units to emit smoke or flames, resulting in minor property damage. Tesla stated that the affected units could fail and overheat, posing potential risks.
Tesla has already discharged nearly all affected Powerwall 2 units in Australia remotely, making them safe for use. The company emphasized that once a unit is discharged and isolated from service, it no longer poses any operational risk. The remaining units are being managed by Tesla’s service teams.
The recall affects only a specific group of Powerwall 2 units, which were sold between November 2020 and June 2022. The recall does not impact Powerwall 3 units. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a notice confirming the affected units were distributed across Australia by Tesla Motors Australia Pty Ltd.
Affected customers have been notified via the Tesla app. Tesla has committed to removing and replacing every affected Powerwall 2 unit under warranty, free of charge. The company is also considering compensation for any lost energy savings due to the discharged systems on a case-by-case basis.
Tesla is prioritizing affected customers and working directly with them, as well as their original installers, to schedule the removal and installation of new systems. Customers can get more information or reach Tesla through the Tesla App, by emailing PWNoticeANZ@tesla.com, or by calling 1800 958 369.
