Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 22, Auckland Council has appointed CMP Construction as the lead contractor for the Te Hono project in Avondale, New Zealand. The development will feature a new library, community hub, and an upgraded town square. The Auckland Urban Development Office is overseeing the project on behalf of the council.

The site for Te Hono was confirmed by the Whau Local Board in December 2018. CMP Construction was chosen after a competitive retendering process that attracted 20 companies. Auckland Urban Development Office priority location director Richard Davison said: “CMP Construction came out on top, not just for their expertise but for their vision. They are aiming to exceed our social procurement targets, will create new jobs within the local community and are committed to achieving at least a Green Star 5 sustainability rating for the build.”

Construction is scheduled to begin this year, with completion and opening expected in mid-2027. Preparatory works have been ongoing since November 2024, including the removal of old structures to prepare the site. Early site activities such as brick paving and installation of water meters began in June this year.

Once completed, the project will offer a wide range of facilities. These include a modern library with a dedicated children’s section, a community hall, street-level and reserve-level meeting rooms, a community kitchen, creative spaces, and a parenting room. Essential amenities such as toilets and other public facilities will also be provided to support visitors and residents.

Auckland Council will focus on the construction of the building that incorporates the library and community hub. At the same time, the Auckland Urban Development Office will take responsibility for upgrading the town square and improving the surrounding outdoor spaces. This integrated approach is aimed at enhancing both indoor and outdoor community experiences.

Whau Local Board chair Kay Thomas highlighted the importance of the project: “Te Hono will be a place to connect, celebrate and build community for generations to come and I’m looking forward to watching our community hub become a reality as momentum speeds up.”

The Te Hono project reflects the council’s commitment to providing modern and inclusive public spaces. By incorporating sustainable design principles, job creation, and facilities that meet diverse community needs, the development is positioned to become a central gathering point in Avondale. With construction set to advance in the coming months, stakeholders and residents anticipate significant progress as the project moves toward its mid-2027 opening.
