Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 24, Nvidia announced on Monday that it will invest $100 billion in OpenAI as part of a partnership aimed at strengthening computing capacity through the development of large-scale AI data centers. The plan includes the addition of at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia-powered data centers, with the first gigawatt scheduled to be deployed in the second half of 2026. Both companies stated that they will finalize details of the agreement in the coming weeks.
In a joint release, Nvidia and OpenAI noted: “This partnership complements the deep work OpenAI and Nvidia are already doing with a broad network of collaborators, including Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank and Stargate partners, focused on building the world’s most advanced AI infrastructure.” Earlier this year, these partners pledged to invest at least $100 billion to build data centers for OpenAI.
The announcement follows OpenAI’s disclosure about ten days earlier of a tentative agreement granting Microsoft a $100 billion equity stake in its for-profit entity. OpenAI, which began as a nonprofit in 2015, maintains oversight of its for-profit operations through its nonprofit board.
Speaking on CNBC, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said: “Building this infrastructure is critical to everything we want to do. Without doing this, we cannot deliver the services people want. We can’t keep making better models.” He added that both Nvidia and Microsoft are “passive investors,” emphasizing that the nonprofit and its board retain control of the company.
OpenAI’s structure has been the subject of ongoing debate and legal scrutiny. Elon Musk, one of its co-founders, filed a lawsuit arguing that the organization has shifted away from its nonprofit mission. In addition, the attorneys general of California and Delaware recently expressed concerns about the safety of ChatGPT, particularly its use by children and teenagers. They cited troubling reports, including a lawsuit filed by the parents of a 16-year-old who died earlier this year following extended interactions with a chatbot.
Despite these challenges, OpenAI reports that it currently has 700 million weekly active users, reflecting the rapid global adoption of its services. The collaboration with Nvidia is intended to expand capacity further, ensuring the delivery of increasingly sophisticated models and tools.
In a separate move last week, Nvidia announced a $5 billion investment in Intel, underscoring its commitment to strengthening the broader semiconductor and AI ecosystem. With demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure continuing to grow, Nvidia’s dual role as a chip supplier and investor highlights its strategy of shaping both hardware and computing capacity.
The Nvidia-OpenAI partnership represents a significant step toward meeting the accelerating needs of the AI sector, combining major investment with the development of large-scale, resilient infrastructure to support future innovation.
