Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 9, SSE Renewables has announced the completion of its 101MW Yellow River Wind Project in County Offaly, Ireland, marking a key milestone in the country’s renewable energy development. Located near Rhode, the 29-turbine wind farm has entered full commercial operation, generating clean electricity to power approximately 75,000 homes annually. The project is expected to cut nearly 70,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year, contributing significantly to Ireland’s transition toward a low-carbon energy system.
The delivery of the project followed EirGrid’s completion of upgrade works at the Derryiron 110kV Transmission Station, which enabled a firm grid connection for the site. The wind farm also underwent comprehensive turbine commissioning checks before achieving full operational status.
SSE Renewables stated that the Yellow River project enhances Ireland’s energy security and supports the national Climate Action Plan, which aims to source 80% of electricity from renewable energy by 2030. Construction began in October 2022, with turbine installation starting in December 2023 and the first energisation achieved in December 2024.
At peak construction, the project supported around 150 full-time jobs, contributing approximately 400,000 working hours. Key supply chain partners included Nordex Group as turbine supplier, Farrans Construction as civil contractor, Suir Engineering for electrical balance of plant, and Port of Galway as logistics partner.
SSE Renewables managing director Stephen Wheeler said: “The successful completion of the Yellow River Wind Farm demonstrates our commitment to delivering Ireland’s climate and energy security goals. Projects like this are essential to helping Ireland achieve its renewable energy ambitions.” He added that the company will continue working closely with government agencies, industry stakeholders, and local communities to accelerate onshore and offshore wind developments.
Heather Donald, SSE Renewables’ director of onshore wind, solar, and battery, highlighted the importance of teamwork and collaboration in achieving the project’s success. She said: “Delivering this project safely and efficiently after three years of construction is a fantastic achievement for our entire team and supply chain partners.”
Donald also emphasized that Yellow River will deliver long-term regional benefits through a multi-year community fund and sustained local investment, ensuring that the economic and social advantages of renewable energy are shared with surrounding communities.
The completion of the Yellow River Wind Project strengthens SSE Renewables’ position as one of Ireland’s leading developers of clean energy infrastructure. The company continues to advance new renewable projects as part of its broader mission to help meet Ireland’s net-zero targets and enhance energy system resilience.
