Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 25, Samsung Electronics and SoftBank have announced a strategic collaboration to accelerate research and innovation in next-generation communication networks, with a particular focus on AI-driven improvements in network performance and efficiency. The agreement centers on four main research areas: 6G, AI for RAN, AI and RAN, and Large Telecom Model applications.

For 6G development, the companies plan to test the 7 GHz band, a potential frequency for future mobile networks. Samsung’s base station technology will be combined with SoftBank’s network expertise to explore new use cases and enhance next-generation connectivity.

In the “AI for RAN” initiative, the collaboration will investigate how artificial intelligence can enhance Radio Access Networks (RAN), focusing specifically on the physical layer (Layer 1). Meanwhile, the “AI and RAN” project will explore the integration of AI and RAN infrastructure, examining how the two systems can efficiently share resources and improve overall network performance.

The “Large Telecom Model” project will leverage SoftBank’s AI foundation model, designed for the telecommunications sector, to accelerate network optimisation. Using Large Language Model (LLM)-based AI, the initiative aims to make telecom operations faster, more secure, and more reliable.

SoftBank Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Hideyuki Tsukuda stated: “We are very pleased to collaborate with Samsung, a global leader in communication technologies. By combining the advanced expertise of both companies, we will accelerate the realisation of next-generation networks that evolve to become more efficient and highly reliable through AI-RAN. SoftBank remains committed to taking on the challenge of building the next-generation social infrastructure essential for a future society where AI and humans coexist.”

Samsung Electronics Vice President and head of the Advanced Communications Research Centre, JinGuk Jeong, added: “Through this collaboration with SoftBank, we aim to define meaningful use cases for both operators and end users, while securing key technologies for future commercialisation. Building on our advanced expertise in AI-RAN and 6G, Samsung will continue to lead innovation in next-generation communications.”

The partnership highlights a shared commitment to advancing AI-driven network technologies and preparing the groundwork for 6G deployment. By combining SoftBank’s network experience with Samsung’s hardware and AI capabilities, the collaboration seeks to optimise network efficiency, reduce latency, and explore new applications for both commercial and consumer use.

This initiative represents a significant step toward the next generation of communication infrastructure, where AI integration and enhanced network performance are expected to transform connectivity and support emerging digital services. Both companies emphasize their focus on practical applications, scalable solutions, and accelerated commercialisation of future mobile technologies, positioning themselves at the forefront of global telecom innovation.
