Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 2, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), represented by its subsidiary China Electric Power Equipment and Technology (CET), to advance Malaysia’s power system modernisation. The agreement was formalised at a ceremony in Shah Alam, Selangor, attended by TNB president and CEO Datuk Ir Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan, CET chair Yu Jun, and Malaysia’s deputy prime minister, Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof.

The venture will focus on three main areas.

The collaboration focuses on three main areas: power system planning and integration, development of smart and resilient networks, and implementation of digital and AI solutions. By leveraging CET’s expertise in energy transition and advanced power systems, TNB aims to improve the operation and management of its grid and distribution network while supporting Malaysia’s grid modernisation efforts and the ASEAN vision for enhanced regional power interconnection.

Yu Jun highlighted CET’s global experience, noting: “CET, as SGCC’s global platform for power project investment, construction, and operation, has completed projects in over 40 countries. We are proud to partner with TNB, a leader in Asia’s power industry, to share SGCC’s experience in ultra-high voltage (UHV) transmission, smart grid resilience, and AI-driven grid management. This collaboration not only strengthens China-Malaysia bilateral ties but also contributes to the broader vision of ASEAN energy security and sustainability.”

Under the MoU, a joint working committee will be established to oversee collaboration progress. Activities will include capacity building, technical studies, and pilot project designs for innovative distribution networks and AI frameworks for grid operation. TNB will provide technical information, while CET will contribute advanced technologies and insights from SGCC’s international projects.

Datuk Ir Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan stated: “As Malaysia’s primary electricity provider, TNB is dedicated to building a more efficient, resilient, and low-carbon power system. This MoU with SGCC, through its wholly owned subsidiary CET, enables us to leverage global best practices in power system planning, smart grid technology, and digital solutions, which are essential for integrating shares of renewable energy and strengthening our role in the ASEAN Power Grid (APG).”

The partnership aligns with broader initiatives to integrate renewable energy into Malaysia’s electricity network. Earlier in June 2025, TNB signed a corporate renewable energy supply agreement with DayOne Data Centers for approximately 500MW of renewable energy.

Through this MoU, TNB and CET aim to advance technological collaboration, enhance grid resilience, and implement AI-driven solutions, supporting Malaysia’s transition to a more modern, efficient, and sustainable power system while contributing to regional energy integration goals.
